Faculty and staff

Volunteer to be a judge at Research and the State

The Graduate Student Council is calling for faculty and post-doc judge volunteers for the annual Research and the State graduate student poster session. The poster session will be held in the K-State Student Union Courtyard on October 27, 2021 from 1:00-3:00pm. The time commitment for judges will be 1-2.5 hours. If interested in serving as a judge, please complete a brief online form to express your interest and provide your availability on October 27.

Admissions

Using Application Fee Waivers

Departments that wish to pay the application fee for graduate applicants may purchase fee waiver codes from the Graduate School. Purchased codes may be given to prospective students so that their application fee can be waived. Codes are available usually in minimum orders of 5 codes. When purchasing, please indicate the quantity of Domestic ($65) and/or International ($75) applications codes that are required. Requests should be sent to jphoran@ksu.edu.

Graduate Applications Processing

The deadline for departments to recommend admission for international applicants for Spring 2022 is September 1, 2021 for individuals who are living outside of the United States or for applicants who are currently enrolled at an institution in the United States who plan to travel outside of the USA prior to January 2022. The deadline to recommend those who are currently in the USA and do not plan on traveling outside the USA is October 1, 2021.

File Programs of Study

As the fall semester begins, please be sure to follow up with your students to make certain they have an approved program of study on file at the Graduate School. Full time students must file a program of study before the end of their second semester to ensure student success.

Plan for Graduation Deadlines

Masters and doctoral students planning to graduate in the next year are encouraged to use the Graduate School’s graduation checklists to assist with completing all steps and requirements to graduate in their desired semester. Students can view checklists online and download a printable PDF version.

The checklists outline requirements and deadlines for:

  • Graduating (earning your degree) in your desired semester
  • Participating in a commencement ceremony
  • Receiving your diploma and final transcript

Opportunities for graduate students

Registration deadline extended! Research and the State poster session

Graduate students from all disciplines are invited to participate in the Graduate Student Council's annual Research and the State graduate student poster session, to be held October 27, 2021. Ten presenters will be selected to represent K-State at the annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit (CGRS) held in the spring. Additionally, Research and the State is a great opportunity for graduate students to share their research or scholarly work with the campus community. Registration deadline extended to September 22, 2021.

Free opportunity to learn about science policy and advocacy from AAAS

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is hosting the Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering (CASE) workshop Sept 23-24 in a virtual format. This workshop is an exciting opportunity to learn from science policy and advocacy experts about the role of science in policymaking and the federal policy-making process. The Workshop empowers participants with ways to become a voice for basic research throughout their careers. Graduate students can join the virtual workshop for free!

Nominate outstanding graduate students for Teaching Excellence Award

Departments are invited to nominate outstanding graduate students with teaching responsibilities for the GSC/MAGS Award for Graduate Student Teaching Excellence. Each department may nominate one masters and one doctoral student for the teaching award. Department nominations are due to College Deans offices by October 1.

ELIGIBILITY UPDATE: Nominees are not required to be on a GTA appointment. Per an update to the MAGS eligibility guidelines, any graduate student who has been enrolled in a masters or doctoral program and has had teaching responsibilities in the 2021 calendar year is eligible for this award competition.

Identifying Graduate Fellowships session

Hosted by the Office of Research Development, this session will address a variety of funding opportunities offered by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DoE), Hertz Foundation, and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Opportunities in the Humanities and Social Sciences will also be addressed. Attendees will also learn how to search for other fellowships on their own. The session will be held October 7, 3:30-5:00pm via Zoom. Register to receive Zoom link.

Personnel updates

Graduate School Launching Search for Executive Assistant

Cynthia Brott, the Graduate School Executive Assistant, has moved to the office of Shared Services Accounting. The Graduate School is in the process of launching a search for a new Executive Assistant. All inquiries that would normally go to Cynthia should now go to gradinfo@ksu.edu. Messages will then be routed to the appropriate team member.
