FAQ
1. Application deadlines
• International students: Early January, determined by the Graduate School:
https://www.k-state.edu/grad/admissions/application-process/international/
• Domestic students: The end of February, determined by the Chemistry Department:
https://www.k-state.edu/grad/admissions/application-process/domestic.html
Of note, full consideration for the Timothy R. Donoghue Graduate Scholarship ($5,000/year add-on for 1 or 2 years) will be given to applications received by November 28.
2. Financial support
Our graduate students are supported as either graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) or graduate research assistants (GRAs).
3. GRE
GRE is not required, but your GRE scores may make your application stronger. During the application process you can skip the GRE section by typing the word WAIVE in the box titled 'Admin Only', shown just below the GRE score entries. This should allow you to proceed without submitting the GRE.
4. English proficiency
For international students, please be sure that you satisfy the English proficiency requirements of the Graduate School (≥ 80 for TOEFL; ≥ 6.5 for IELTS).
https://www.k-state.edu/grad/student-success/graduate-handbook/chapter1.html
We strongly encourage you to retake TOEFL or IELTS if your reading, writing and/or listening score(s) are within or below the score ranges for the Graduate Pathway Program (i.e., 16-19 for TOEFL (MyBest); 6 for IELTS). Also, it is desirable if the speak score is ≥ 22 for TOEFL (MyBest) or ≥ 7 for IELTS to waive Speak test that is requested by Kansas Board of Regents (https://www.k-state.edu/elp/departments/speak-testing.html).
5. Research group
You are encouraged to contact a professor, but this does not mean you must work with the professor. You will have a chance to meet and discuss with several professors in the first semester, and will officially start working with your major professor in the late November.
6. Affidavit of financial support for international applicants
You do not need to provide the affidavit for application to our PhD program.
7. Spring admission
We do not accept applications for spring enrollment.
8. MS application
We only accept applications for PhD, not MS. Of note, domestic students typically enter directly after the BS; international students may enter after receiving a BS or MS depending on what is most common for their countries.
