Philosophy Major

Philosophy majors excel at critical writing and argumentation, which are necessary skills for many professions.  The following curriculum applies to all majors entering in Fall, 2013, or later.  For students who entered the major prior to Fall, 2013, you should speak to your advisor about which curriculum is most suitable for you to follow.  The older curriculum is available here.

Core curriculum

All philosophy majors must take the following eight courses (24 credits):

  • PHILO 301  History of Philosophy
  • PHILO 303  Writing Philosophy
  • PHILO 305  Reasons, Decisions, and Society
  • PHILO 320  Symbolic Logic I
  • PHILO 330  Moral Philosophy
  • PHILO 335  Introduction to Social and Political Philosophy
  • PHILO 340  Reasons and Reliable Knowledge
  • PHILO 345  World, Things, and Properties

Standard philosophy option (B.A. or B.S.)

This option is for students interested in a traditional liberal arts course of study or who desire to do graduate work in philosophy. Requirements: 36 credit hours.

  1. Core curriculum (24 credits)
  2. Four philosophy electives (12 credits).  Three of the electives must be at or above the 500 level.

Pre-law options (B.A. or B.S.)

While no one major is given preference by law school admission boards, law schools recognize the value of philosophy for refining skills in expression, comprehension, and critical thinking.

Single major pre-law option

Requirements: 36 credit hours.

  1. Core curriculum (24 credits)
  2. PHILO 535 Philosophy of Law (3 credits)
  3. PHILO 525 Social and Political Philosophy or PHILO 585 Ethics (3 credits)
  4. Two philosophy electives (6 credits).  One elective must be at or above the 500 level.
Double major pre-law option

Requirements: 30 credit hours in philosophy plus second major.

  2. PHILO 535 Philosophy of Law (3 credits)
  3. 1 philosophy elective (3 credits)

Philosophy/pre-business option (B.A. or B.S.)

The pre-business option is for students who plan to do further work leading to a master's in business administration.

Single major pre-business option

Requirements: 36 credit hours.

  1. Core curriculum (24 credits)
  2. PHILO 380 Business Ethics (3 credits)
  3. One of the following (3 credits):
    • PHILO 525 Social and Political Philosophy
    • PHILO 585 Ethics
    • PHILO 650 Rationality and Action
    • PHILO 665 Philosophy of Economics
  4. Two philosophy electives (6 credits)
Double major pre-business option

Requirements: 30 credit hours.

This option is for students who wish to combine a philosophy/pre-business degree with an undergraduate degree in the College of Business Administration.

  1. Core curriculum (24 credits)
  2. PHILO 390 Business Ethics (3 credits)
  3. Philosophy elective (3 credits)

Philosophy/pre-ministry option (B.A. or B.S.)

This is a nonsectarian program for students who are interested in the religious ministry as a profession. Students in this program will be advised on other courses outside philosophy recommended by most American schools of theology. Requirements: 30 credit hours in philosophy and two approved courses outside of philosophy (clarified below).

  2. Two of the following courses (6 credits):
    • PHILO 510 Symbolic Logic II
    • PHILO 615 Philosophy of Religion
    • PHILO 635 Metaphysics
    • PHILO 640 Epistemology
    • PHILO 655 Philosophy of Mind
    • Philosophy electives
  3. Two courses in which religion is studied, from departments other than philosophy. The Department of Philosophy must approve counting these courses towards completion of the major. 

Philosophy/Pre-med option (B.A. or B.S.)

While no one major is given preference by medical schools and related post-graduate programs, their admission committees recognize philosophy as a valuable primary or secondary major. Students in this program will be advised to supplement their education with an important science component (i.e. a minor in either biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or physics).

Single major pre-med option

Requirements: 36 credit hours in philosophy.  Students choosing this option and planning to apply for medical school are strongly advised to combine it with at least one minor in biology, chemistry, or physics.

  2. PHILO 365 Medical Ethics (3 credits)
  3. Three philosophy electives, one of which is at or above the 500 level (9 credits)
Double major pre-med option

Requirements: 30 credit hours in philosophy.  This option is for students who wish to combine a philosophy/pre-med option with another major in the College of Arts and Sciences. 

  1. Core curriculum (24 credits)
  2. PHILO 365 Medical Ethics (3 credits)
  3. One philosophy elective (3 credits)

Interdisciplinary option (B.A. or B.S.)

This option is for students who wish to combine a major in philosophy with a major in another discipline. Each student completing a degree under this option must have a faculty advisor in the Department of Philosophy who supervises the student's program.

This option requires completion of the core curriculum, six credit hours of philosophy electives, and completion of another major in the College of Arts and Sciences.  At least one elective course must be PHILO 680 Independent Study or receive prior departmental approval.
