Young Writers' Workshop now accepting applications for June program

Submitted by Karin Westman

Young Writers Workshop

Do you know eighth-, ninth- or 10th-grade students who love to write? Encourage them to sign up for the 10th annual Young Writers' Workshop, June 19-23.

Sponsored by the English department in the College of Arts and Sciences, with support from the Caroline Peine Charitable Foundation and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, the Young Writers' Workshop provides five days of creative writing workshops with the guidance of experienced K-State faculty and graduate students.

Enrollment is free but limited to 15 students to ensure close attention to students' creative work.

"I'm looking forward to getting to know more young writers at this summer's workshop," said Traci Brimhall, professor of English, director of the graduate track in creative writing, and program director.

"This week of creative play is made all the more immersive and fun because we get to spend it in the Beach Museum of Art and host guest speakers who write in a variety of genres."

Exit surveys from the 2022 class of young writers demonstrate the continued success of the summer program: 100% of participants agreed or strongly agreed that the instructors were encouraging and helpful, and 100% said they felt encouraged to continue writing creatively following the workshop.

"With the continued support of our alumni donors Helen and Duke Dupre and the co-sponsorship of the Caroline Peine Charitable Foundation and the Beach Museum, we can once again offer young writers the opportunity to develop their creativity and practice their craft," said Karin Westman, department head of English. "We welcome the opportunity to celebrate and foster the arts and humanities and the young writers of Kansas."

Visit the program's webpage for application requirements and submission information. The priority deadline for applications is May 15; applicants will be notified by May 25.
