K-State Parking Services to implement license plate recognition technology

Submitted by Brennan Bestwick

K-State will implement a license plate recognition system in fall 2023. This technology eliminates the need for physical parking permits, like hangtags or stickers. Virtual registration of users' license plates will serve as the permit, granting access to K-State parking lots and the garage. Cameras installed on patrol vehicles will capture license plate images as digital data, comparing this information instantly to information registered within the K-State Parking portal.

Parking Services will begin testing the new software in fall 2022 ahead of full implementation in fall 2023.

License plate recognition technology will better address the needs of K-State permit users. Parking Services can offer more flexible parking permits to accommodate diverse work schedules. Real-time virtual permits eliminate the need for customers to stand in line or wait for permits to arrive in the mail. Visitor parking will be quick and easy, enabling guests to pay for parking upon arrival via app or pay station.

Parking Services is committed to providing updates and training to impacted departments and staff as license plate recognition progresses.
