KAWSE to host Career Chat: Hidden Barriers in STEM

Submitted by KAWSE Office

KAWSE, or the K-State Office for the Advancement of Women in Science and Engineering, is hosting its spring Career Chat from noon-1 p.m. April 27. The topic of this event is highlighting barriers that can bring added challenges to pursuing STEM degrees and careers. Lunch is provided to those who attend in person. Registration required by April 22.

The panel discussion features K-State students, postdoctoral researchers and staff, all of whom will share their own stories of navigating a challenge during college or in their careers.

Topics include dealing with unexpected health diagnoses, difficult professional conflicts, imposter syndrome and mental health in the workplace.

Panelsits include:

  • Janae Brown, graduate student, animal sciences and industry
  • Anastasia Cooper, postdoctoral researcher, entomology
  • Jacqueline Mallie, graduate student, entomology
  • Paulina Maldonado Ruiz, research associate, entomology
  • Melitza Rios-Ramirez, academic advisor, biology
  • Chandima Wkumbura WG, graduate student, agronomy

This event is made possible thanks to Anastasia Cooper, the 2021-2022 Postdoctoral Travel Fund awardee. The KAWSE ADVANCE program awards up to $500 to a postdoctoral researcher from an eligible STEM department to cover expenses associated with a presentation at a conference. Award winners also host a Career Chat to share their experiences as a STEM professional.
