Guatemala international experience information sessions today

Submitted by Linda Yarrow

Are you looking for a life-transforming experience? The food, nutrition, dietetics and health department offers an education abroad program in Guatemala. The focus is on service-learning to help the Indigenous Maya people improve their quality of life. The program has a variable length of stay — six or more weeks — and there is an on-site K-State program manager to assist students while living, learning and serving in Guatemala.

To learn more, join us today for information meetings at 11:30 a.m. or 5 p.m. in 146 Justin Hall. We will discuss dates of travel, Guatemala program partners, estimated costs and benefits to both you and the Maya people. If you would like to join via Zoom, please contact Linda Yarrow, lyarrow@k-state.edu, for further information.

Examples of service-learning opportunities: work in medical clinics, teach nutrition lessons all ages, assist with community garden programs, assist with clean water programs, present cooking classes, conduct community health assessments, develop physical activity programs, assist with disease prevention programs, tutor in English/computers/business skills, assist with housing improvements, provide guidance on agricultural programs, teach financial skills, teach entrepreneurial skills, as well as research opportunities.

Why should you consider this program? Working and studying abroad makes individuals an active and engaged part of a global community. This experience can enhance job prospects and make you more competitive in an international economy, provide a broader outlook, and inspire personal and professional growth. You will have the opportunity to acquire and cultivate skills and make a positive difference in the lives of the Indigenous Maya.
