K-State researchers invite participants for Parkinson's disease study

Invitation for Parkinson's Research

K-State researchers from the College of Health and Human Sciences are recruiting participants for a study examining the impact of daily consumption of probiotics and vitamin B on gut health, metabolic health, and neuroendocrine health, physical health, mood and quality of life. The research participants will receive probiotics — available in the U.S market, worth $100 — and vitamin for 12 weeks for free of charge.

The study provides participants the following opportunities:

  • Learn about their health, metabolic, neuroendocrine, motor and non-motor functions.
  • Earn $75 for participation. 
  • Receive a free gut microbiome — gut bacterial ecology — analysis, cholesterol and blood lipid levels, liver enzyme levels in the blood, dietary/nutritional assessment, hormonal analysis, information on their mood states and quality of life — worth $450, all free of charge. 

The first 42 participants who complete the study will be eligible to enter a drawing to win one of several prizes, including:

  • Parkinson's self-stabilizing spoon and fork set for hand tremor — worth $270 — one award. 
  • Waterproof fitness tracker smartwatch, activity tracker with heart rate blood pressure calories pedometer sleep monitor, one award.
  • Essentials weighted blanket, three awards. 
  • LCD digital photo frame with auto slideshow, one award.
  • Parkinson's adaptive utensils — weighted knives, forks, and spoons silverware set, large grip built-up utensils, two awards.

Registration is now open to the public. Anyone with Parkinson's disease, willing to consume probiotics and vitamin B daily for 12 weeks are eligible to register to participate in this study in either way:

(a) You can visit the research locations in K-State to participate in the study

or

(b) You can invite the researchers for free home visits to participate in the study, no matter where you are, all free of charge.

There are no extra financial costs for participating in this study. You can participate in this study without needing to drive or leave your house. 

Eligible participants can enroll now while the limited number of seats available lasts.

The total time commitment for the whole study will be about 12-15 hours. The research team will keep in contact with participants and assist the participants for their visits to research locations at K-State or arrange home visits upon request at no cost to the participants no matter where they are.

This study has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board, IRB#9924, and the federal agency, the Food and Drug Administration has cleared the researchers to conduct this study.
