Reconstruction of the first walking machine, other kinetic mechanisms focus of Art and Math Seminar

Submitted by Natalia Rojkovskaia

Kinetic mechanisms by Chebyshev

The name of Chebyshev is familiar to advanced calculus students, but very few people know that the scientist invented many original mechanisms, including the first walking machine that was presented at the 1878 World's Fair in Paris.

From 12-1 p.m. on Feb. 18, the Art and Math Seminar presents a virtual talk by Nikolai Andreev, founding director of the Laboratory of Popularization and Promotion of Mathematics at the Steklov Mathematical Institute of Russian Academy of Science in Moscow, exploring the visual reconstructions of Chebyshev's inventions. Registration is required to participate in this seminar.

The collection of scientific animations, Mechanisms by Tchebyshev, is one of many educational projects by the Laboratory. In 2017, Andreev received the Golden Medal of the Russian Academy of Science for outstanding achievements in the popularization of science.

The online seminar is organized by the department of mathematics at Kansas State University in cooperation with the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. The complete seminar schedule and more details on the series are available online.
