Explore graduate student research with implications for Kansas

Submitted by Megan Miller

The 18th Capitol Graduate Research Summit kicks off today, Thursday, Feb. 18, featuring 10 Kansas State University graduate students whose research address topics with important implications for issues in the state of Kansas. Presentation topics include agricultural engineering, chemotherapy, student mental health, economics, crop management, and health communication.

The statewide summit includes current research from graduate students at Kansas State University, Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Pittsburg State University, University of Kansas, the University of Kansas Medical Center, and Wichita State University. Kansas legislators have been invited to view the students' presentations to learn about the value of research conducted at our institutions.

University faculty and industry judges will select the most outstanding presentations to receive awards.

This year's event will be in a virtual format. Visit the CGRS event site to view presentations between Feb. 18-25.

The 10 K-State presenters were chosen based on their research presentations at Research and the State, an annual forum hosted by the Graduate Student Council, in October 2020:

  • Chetan Badgujar, doctoral student in biological and agricultural engineering, "Performance of Autonomous Ground Vehicle on Varying Slope."
  • Jaeyoung Ha, doctoral student in environmental design and planning, "Does Campus Biodiversity Matter for Student's Psychological Wellbeing?"
  • Stephen Hammond, doctoral student in human ecology, specializing in kinesiology, "Skin Blood Vessel Responses Following 5-Fluorouracil Chemotherapy Administration."
  • Juhwan Lim, doctoral student in human ecology, specializing in hospitality administration, "The Role of Photos to Attract More Guests for Local Community."
  • Tian Liu, doctoral student in economics, "General Trade Policy Uncertainty and U.S. Trade Flows."
  • Cameron Osborne, doctoral student in entomology, "Identifying Enzymes Limiting an Effective RNA Response in the Biting Midge Culicoides Sonorensis."
  • Manjot Kaur Rekhi, master's student in agronomy, "Sensing Nutrient Dynamics Using Soil-Based Microbial Fuel Cells."
  • Kelly Shunje, doctoral student in chemistry, "Fine-Tuning the Physical Properties of Urea Fertilizer Using Crystal Engineering."
  • Hannah Stowe, master's student in entomology, "Discontinuous Diet Alters Fitness and Flight Behavior of Hippodamia Convergens (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)."
  • Jeremy Williams, master's student in public health, "Data-Driven Stories of Opportunity: Development of a Comprehensive Communication Plan for the Riley County Opportunity Map."
