Lafene Health Center offers Adulting 101 workshops this fall

Submitted by Megan Katt

The WellCAT Ambassadors at Lafene Health Center are welcoming back Adulting 101 this fall, a series of workshops designed to teach K-State students basic life skills that are not often taught in the academic classroom.

While originally designed to be hands-on workshops, this semester's workshops will be offered via Zoom. The series' first workshop will take place Tuesday, Sept. 8. The following is the fall 2020 schedule:

Workshop 1 — The Perfect Job Candidate, Sept. 8, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Pat Hudgins, associate director of the Career Center, will present this workshop to equip students to "get the job." From resume preparation tips to social media hygiene and interview etiquette, participants will leave this workshop prepared for the real world.

Workshop 2 — How to Be An Informed Voter in Local and National Elections, Sept. 22, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Kim Zito, a former journalist for the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones in London, CNBC Europe, and NPR station WUSF in Tampa, has given up being objective and has turned into a community activist and vote mobilizer. This workshop focuses on both local and national elections, explains the voting process, and describes common political lingo.

Workshop 3 — Car Maintenance, Oct. 6, 5:30-7 p.m.
Students in the Manhattan Area Technical College automotive technology program will lead this workshop and will walk participants through checking oil and other fluid levels, checking tire air pressure and changing a tire.

Workshop 4 — Conflict Resolution/Difficult Conversations, Oct. 20, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Brett Mallon, instructor in K-State's conflict resolution program, will lead this workshop. His goal is for participants to walk away feeling more comfortable and confident in dealing with conflict in their personal and professional lives. Participants will learn to shift away from negative conceptions of conflict and explore what it means to befriend conflict and embrace its positive growth potentials. Participants will get a chance to experience communication-related conflicts and consider specific strategies and skills that can help resolve these types of conflicts.

Workshop 5 — Go Green!, Nov. 3, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
With global warming a serious threat to our planet, it is vital that we all make changes in order to protect the environment. This workshop will provide participants with ideas and resources for incorporating affordable, environmentally-friendly practices in their day-to-day lives.

Workshop 6 — Survival Guide: Life Hacks for Adult Life, Nov. 17, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
A panel of WellCAT Ambassadors will lead this lighthearted workshop and provide participants with life hacks to make everyday life easier. From sewing on a button and explaining the function of the switch on a ceiling fan to folding a fitted sheet... students, you won't want to miss this one!
