Summary: This Vanguard Lecture will explore the ideological underpinnings of educational expectations operating at multiple levels of schooling and society as a method to challenge the political construction of knowledge and power. From an interdisciplinary perspective that draws on the traditions of ethnic studies, social psychology, sociology and critical race studies in education, the speaker explores historical and contemporary examples of the intractable and often contradictory relationship between race and expectancy practices in schools. One major source of this inequity is the ethos and influences of these expectations that actively manifest unjust epistemological and material conditions at the intersections of race, class, gender and other politically constructed difference. Through qualitative inquiries, the speaker argues that the current conditions of education will only transform when students and their families are valued and cared for through equitable structures and anticolonial expectations based on humanizing models of education. Lecture participants can expect to gain unique interdisciplinary perspectives, from theory to practice, in understanding the significance of expectations in education.
