Live Ideas Lecture: 'Machiavelli and the Fate of the Imperial Republics'

Submitted by Whitney Croll

Daniel Kapust, professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will present "Machiavelli and the Fate of the Imperial Republics" as part of the Live Ideas Lecture Series at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in Regnier Forum at Regnier Hall.

Machiavelli is almost universally viewed as an advocate of cruelty, trickery and imperial expansion, but Professor Daniel Kapust questions this received opinion by exploring Machiavelli's enigmatic book, "Discourses on Livy." Kapust finds in the "Discourses" a deep ambiguity toward empire — an ambiguity as relevant in our age as it was in Machiavelli's.

Live Ideas Lecture Series is hosted Primary Texts Certificate Program in the College of Arts and Sciences.
