Tree identification class with Kansas Forest Service and UFM on Sept. 24

Submitted by Kayla Savage

Explore the Kansas Forest Service Demonstration Arboretum and Honor Grove during this interactive class and learn the basics of tree identification, including leaf shape and arrangements and other characteristics. Introduction to Tree Identification will take place from 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Sept. 24. An identification key, water bottle and refreshments will be provided.

Instructor Kim Bomberger is a district community forester and instructor Ryan Armbrust is the forest health forester at the Kansas Forest Service. Academically prepared as horticulturists, both are lifelong plant enthusiasts. In their professional capacities, they teach multiple workshops, engage with the public, and enjoy cultivating people’s knowledge about trees suitable for Kansas and the Great Plains.

Those attending should bring lawn chairs and prepare to be outside for a large part of the class. In case of inclement weather, the class will be held inside the Kansas Forest Service State Office. Ages 14 and up. Ages 14-17 require an enrolled parent or guardian accompany them in the class. This class is available to the community through a partnership of the Kansas Forest Service of K-State and UFM Community Learning Center and registration is required either online or by calling UFM at 785-539-8763.
