Application open for 2018 Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Small Grant Program
The Graduate School announces the fourth year of funding for the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, or AHSS, Small Grant Program, to support research expenses for master's and doctoral students in their final year. Grants up to $1,000 will support direct research costs such as travel to an archive, data collection, or exhibition and performance expenses for graduate students doing original research in the arts, humanities and social sciences. A panel of faculty in these disciplines will review applications in late 2017. Funds will be available after Jan. 15, 2018.
Recent grant recipients have used the funding to complete research to design a model school in Nicaragua, provide Girl Scout leader wellness training, evaluate participatory research on food insecurity on campuses, and an analysis of competition in the digital music aggregation industry. These are just a few examples of how the $500-$1,000 grants made a difference.
"My master's project focused on wildlife tourism and conservation practices," said Kelsie Shy, 2017 grant recipient. "Research was done all year in order to find out how informed habitat design can contribute to conservation efforts and provide opportunities for interaction between animals and visitors, specifically in an elephant sanctuary. The AHSS Small Grant Program allowed me to further develop my research in wildlife design."
Last year's continued strong applicant pool demonstrates the strong need for this program, as it helps reduce students' financial burden in fields where there is often limited external funding. The grant program was highly recommended in the "Report of the Task Force on Needs of KSU Graduate Students in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Conducting Scholarly Activities" that was completed in summer 2014.
