Call for faculty mentors: 2018 Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program

Submitted by Kelsey Peterson

The Graduate School is searching for potential faculty mentors for the Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, or SUROP, for summer 2018. SUROP is a program designed to provide research experience to undergraduate students who have an interest in pursuing graduate study.

SUROP participants are expected to spend 40 hours per week working on research-related activities — e.g., literature reviews, data collection, analyses, etc. Participants also are required to attend weekly seminars and are expected to attend other events coordinated by the Graduate School. The seminars provide participants with valuable information about research and the graduate school experience. Other events and activities may be educational in nature and serve to promote interaction among SUROP participants and participants of other K-State undergraduate summer research programs. Mentors are asked to plan research activities around weekly seminars and other scheduled events.

Faculty interested in serving as mentors must be available during the majority of the nine-week program — approximately late May to late July — and should have regular and frequent interactions with their SUROP student. Mentors are strongly encouraged to participate in social events and other activities hosted by the SUROP and REU coordinators.

The participant stipend is $4,500. For each SUROP participant mentored by its faculty, a department must contribute $2,000 to assist with the total cost of supporting a SUROP participant. Please contact us with any questions or concerns about mentor roles and responsibilities.

K-State faculty members interested in serving as a SUROP mentor in summer 2018 should express their interest via email to Kimberly Morrison at gdschgra@k-state.edu by Friday, Oct. 27.

If you have any questions regarding the SUROP program, contact Morrison or Michael Herman at mherman@k-state.edu

Thank you for your time and continued support of SUROP!
