Canfield to present at American Society of Landscape Architects conference

Submitted by Thom Jackson

Jessica Canfield, assistant professor, will present "Assessing Landscape Performance: What to Measure and How" at the 2015 Kentucky American Society of Landscape Architects Conference, Feb. 28, in Newport, Kentucky.

Canfield joined the College of Architecture, Planning & Design as an assistant professor of landscape architecture in 2009.

She has a master's degree in landscape architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture from Colorado State University. Before teaching, she worked professionally for AECOM, Gustafson Guthrie Nichol, and Martha Schwartz Partners.

Canfield focuses her practice, teaching and research around improving the social dimensions and environmental performance of urban public space. She is particularly interested in the concept of landscape performance and the relationship between how a landscape looks and how it functions. She has been twice awarded research fellowships from the Landscape Architecture Foundation to develop case studies of high-performance sites. Canfield is especially passionate about teaching en plein air, and has led study tours in China, New York, and Scandinavia. Her students' work has been recognized regionally and nationally, and her dedication to teaching earned her the Mary Jarvis Emerging Faculty of Distinction in Landscape Architecture Award in 2012 and the McElwee Faculty Teaching Award in 2013.
