Shaping the design leaders of tomorrow through national event

Submitted by Courtney Boman

Kansas State University's landscape architecture and regional & community planning department will host the 10th annual national Xtreme LA Challenge Oct. 7-9.

Twelve fifth-year students from the four disciplines within the College of Architecture, Planning & Design at K-State have been selected to participate, along with 20 professionals from around the United States.

This professional development program is intended to provide exposure and experience that will benefit both participants and the firms in which they work. Young professionals will be mentored by distinguished landscape architects and will, in turn, have the opportunity to mentor promising students preparing to enter the profession. The program is put together by Landscape Forms in partnership with the Landscape Architecture Foundation. Landscape Forms CEO Richard Heriford is a 1976 K-State architecture graduate.

Two teams made up of best-in-class young design professionals and master's-level landscape architecture, architecture, planning, interior architecture & product design students will work under the guidance of prominent landscape architects to envision creative solutions for critical urban challenges in a vibrant, growing Manhattan.

The teams will participate in a two-day intense design charrette to look at future development of Manhattan, using maps, surveys, current planning studies, regulatory guidelines, direct inspection of land areas and information provided by local officials, and guided by One Planet principles of sustainability. The participants will be asked to create socially, environmentally and economically sustainable solutions.

At the conclusion of the program, the two teams will present final proposals at noon Thursday, Oct. 9, in Seaton Hall’s Pierce Commons. This presentation is open to media and the public.

Students participating in the event include: Rachael Mayhill, Council Grove; Lauren Harness, Garden City; Taylor Ricketts, Lenexa; Alexsis Stensland, Manhattan; Sarah Swaim, Tonganoxie; and Teague Peak, Topeka.

From out of state: Timothy Tse, Santa Clara, California; Eric Conner, Naperville, Illinois; James DeVault, St. Charles, Illinois; Rachel Fox, St. Louis, Missouri; Katherine Leise, Omaha, Nebraska; and Dylan Rupar, Heath, Texas.
