Sonia Kovalevsky Day: Math workshops for middle school students

Submitted by Virginia Naibo

Sonia Kovalevsky Day

The Kansas State University mathematics department and its Graduate Student Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics will host the Sonia Kovalevsky Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20, in Cardwell Hall.

The event is open to all area middle school students, grades 6-8, and is free — including lunch. The goal for this event is to increase girls' interest in mathematics, assist them in the transition to high school math and encourage their pursuit of STEM disciplines. The event is open to all genders.

Participants will engage in hands-on activities through a series of workshops on math topics and will have the chance to interact with other participants, math graduate and undergraduate students, and math professors.

Space is limited — learn more and register at math.k-state.edu/skday by April 12. Email skday@k-state.edu for questions.

Kovalevsky was a 19th-century mathematician, advocate for women's rights and pioneer for female mathematicians around the world.
