Performance management update: Focus groups in full swing; strategic partner selected

Submitted by Vikki Watson

Focus group meetings totaling more than 150 employees are currently underway as the creation of a unified performance evaluation system gains momentum entering 2024.

The focus groups kicked off the week of Dec. 18 and continue this week, Jan. 2-5. They include wide representation from across the university, including shared governance, affinity groups, senior leadership, supervisors, university support staff and unclassified employees. Additional opportunities to provide feedback will be available as the process continues.

The sessions are being conducted by Segal, an HR consulting firm chosen to assist the executive leadership team and steering committee in developing the new performance evaluation system. Segal has experience working with a broad range of clients, including dozens within higher education.

Alignment with Next-Gen K-State
The performance management initiative is part of the Next-Gen K-State strategic plan, aligning with the university's imperative to become the employer of choice in Kansas and higher education. Two phases make up the initiative:

  • Phase I: Creation of a unified staff performance evaluation form and alignment of performance management policies.
  • Phase II: Development of an electronic learning and performance management system to automate the performance review process, facilitate employee development and track progress on annual goals.

Additional details will be shared as work within each phase progresses.

Guidance for calendar year 2023 evaluations
Supervisors should continue to use the current performance management form and process when evaluating employees for calendar year 2023. Supervisors and employees also are encouraged to set 2024 performance goals using the current form and practice, and then transfer that information to the new form and process once they are available.
