A team of students from the GE Johnson Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science took part in the Associated Schools of Construction Region 4 2023 Construction Competition on Oct. 22-25 in Nebraska City, Nebraska.

This regional competition held each year includes student teams from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The competition gives students the opportunity to problem-solve a variety of different scenarios that will be presented in the construction industry. The competition covers multiple sectors, such as preconstruction, commercial, heavy civil, design-build and more. Each sector has its own problem statement and tasks for the student teams to solve.

The 2023 teams from K-State competed in four divisions: Commercial-CM@Risk, Commercial-General Contractor, Heavy-Civil and Design-Build. The Commercial-CM@Risk team from K-State placed first in its division.

The Commercial-CM@Risk team members were Matt Bachman, senior in construction science and management; Denton Demel, senior in construction science and management; Spencer Dugan, senior in construction science and management; Zach Ferguson, junior in construction science and management; Layla Gonzalez, junior in construction science and management; and Taylor Phillips, senior in construction science and management.

The team was coached by Steve Schaffner, instructor of architectural engineering and construction science, and Kyle Larson, assistant professor of architectural engineering and construction science.
