Preparation is key to safety

Submitted by Lisa Linck

It is recommended that families have a plan in case of an emergency and practice it at least twice a year. Plans should take the physical capabilities of family members in mind, including children and older adults.

When planning for a potential emergency, the basics of survival are important. Consider the following items when creating an emergency preparedness kit:

  • Water: One gallon per person, per day for at least three days
  • Enough nonperishable food, for at least three days, and can opener
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First-aid kit
  • Tool kit
  • Moist towelettes and garbage bags for sanitation
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape
  • Cellphone and portable charger
