New works featured at 'Sticks and Strings' concert

Submitted by Kurt Gartner

The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance will present its spring semester edition of "Sticks and Strings," a recital featuring student chamber ensembles from percussion and strings studios. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, in McCain's Kirmser Hall. The recital is free and open to the public, and it will include the world premiere performance of two new works for chamber percussion.

"En’v_IRON*mental" is a work that Professor Kurt Gartner commissioned from California-based composer Jasper Sussman. Also on the program is "Cherry Hills," featuring student and composer of the work Jacob Morgan on marimba.

In addition to the percussion chamber music, student string quartets will perform movements from Florence Price's String Quartet No. 1 in G major and Ludwig Von Beethoven's String Quartet in C minor, Op. 18, No. 4.

Also on the program is a setting of the traditional West African piece, "Yaa Yaa Kole," arranged by Neil Dunn, instructor of music.
