Celebrate Black History Month with the Diversity Programs Office

Submitted by Zelia Wiley

In celebration of Black History Month, the K-State College of Agriculture/K-State Research and Extension Diversity Programs Office and K-State Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences, or MANRRS, chapter are hosting a variety of events throughout February.

On Feb. 16, the Diversity Programs Office will partner with the K-State Black Faculty and Staff Alliance and the Dow Center for Multicultural and Community Studies to host the 2023 annual Boyer/Switzer Lecture. This year's lecture will be at 11:30 a.m. in Town Hall, 114 Staley School of Leadership, or via Zoom ID: 971 9351 3426. The lecture will feature Bernard Harris Jr., retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, as he speaks about "Resistance to Power: The Education and Training of Seven African American U.S. Army Officers for World War I and its Aftermath." Thank you to the DOW Center for Multicultural and Community Studies for sponsoring this event.

On Feb. 20-24, K-State MANRRS will observe its spring 2023 MANRRS Week. The week will feature events and philanthropy to raise awareness about MANRRS. Throughout the week, MANRRS is partnering with the Popenoe Entomology Club for a food drive. Please bring canned goods and nonperishable items throughout the week to 132 or 139 Waters Hall to be donated to Cats' Cupboard.

On Feb. 20 from 8-10 a.m., K-State MANRRS will host "Coffee Hour with Hill's Pet Food and MANRRS." Stop by the table for free coffee and donuts and to learn about MANRRS and Hill's Pet Food opportunities in the lobby of Waters Hall.

On Feb. 22 at 5:30 p.m., the Diversity Programs Office will partner with K-State MANRRS and Scoular to host the 2023 Wallace Ray Kidd Diversity Award reception in Rooms 204/205 of the Morris Family Multicultural Center. Join us as the 2023 award recipients — Mary Ellen Barkley, assistant director of K-State Career Center and College of Agriculture Liaison, and Andrew Barkley, professor of agricultural economics — are recognized for their contributions to diversity and inclusion in the College of Agriculture. Thank you to Scoular for sponsoring this event.

To finish Black History Month, the Diversity Programs Office will host the spring 2023 "Growing our Mindset" Diversity Forum at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in Town Hall, 114 Staley School of Leadership, or via Zoom ID: 975 1489 8690. This semester's forum will feature Lauren Brewer. Brewer is a graduate of the K-State grain science department with a master's in grain science and a doctorate in cereal chemistry. She is a previous K-State MANRRS officer. Currently, Brewer is a member of the College of Agriculture Dean's Advisory Board and serves as the manager of research and development at General Mills, Inc. Join us as Brewer leads a conversation about accelerating diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace. The event is in partnership with K-State MANRRS, Ag Ambassadors and Ag Student Council. Thank you to the DOW Center for Multicultural and Community Studies for sponsoring this event.

Thank you to Dairy Farmers of America for joining the K-State MANRRS Chapter earlier this month. Please continue to look for updates about the Diversity Programs Office and more on social media. For more information about upcoming events, please contact Zelia Wiley, assistant dean and director of diversity programs, at 785-532-5793 or zwiley@k-state.edu.
