Vallejo to attend Paleography and Digital Humanities Institute

Submitted by Christie Launius

Maria G. Vallejo, who teaches American ethnic studies courses in the social transformation studies department, has been accepted to the spring 2023 NEH-AHRC Spanish Paleography and Digital Humanities Institute hosted by the Benson Library at the University of Texas, Austin.

The online institute will provide participants with practical training in the reading and visualization of 16th- to 18th-century manuscripts in Spanish. The institute will also provide specialized training on several free and open-source tools that can be used to facilitate collaborative research and visualize data in colonial texts.

Vallejo will be transcribing materials from the Benson Latin American Collection at UT-Austin during the institute. Upon completion of the institute, these transcriptions will be published in the Texas Data Repository and she will become a contributor to the Unlocking the Colonial Archive Project.
