Shreepad Joglekar to lead art department

Submitted by Malorie Sougey

Shreepad Joglekar, associate professor of art and area coordinator of photography, is the new Lindy E. Bell head of the art department.

Joglekar is an immigrant worker from Mumbai, India, and joined the art department at K-State in August 2011. He has been awarded artist residencies at the National Center for Contemporary Art, Kronstadt, St. Petersburg, Russia; Weir Farm National Historic Site in Branchville, Connecticut; and the Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz, New York.

His work has been shown in several galleries in the U.S., Canada, China, Cuba, Egypt, Germany, India, Poland and the United Kingdom. He has presented this research at interdisciplinary conferences in the U.S., France and the United Kingdom.

"I feel deeply honored by the support of my colleagues," Joglakar said. "I am excited to serve in this new role!"

Exploring natural, constructed and intellectual spaces has been a dominant theme in Joglekar's work. His current work inverts the conventional photographic process — instead of capturing the appearance of space at a moment in time, he focuses on recording periods of time with sound and then digitally visualizing them as landscapes. He will exhibit this work at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City in October.

Since 2018, Joglekar has co-led the project "Hungry Heartland," focusing on issues related to food insecurity in Kansas. The project has received funding from the Union of Concerned Scientists, Northwest Kansas Economic Innovation Center and the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission.

"Shreepad Joglekar is a leader in providing experiential learning opportunities for his students, which really helps them apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations," said Chris Culbertson, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "His leadership in this and other areas will continue to help us provide a dynamic art curriculum and prepare our students for great jobs once they graduate."
