Going global: International Week a celebration of cultures

Submitted by Julie Fosberg

A global fashion show and other cultural events are part of Kansas State University's International Week celebration, April 9-17.

The annual event, created by K-State's International Coordinating Council, promotes diversity awareness around campus. This year's theme is Global Apple. The week is sponsored by the K-State Student Governing Association and the Graduate Student Council.

Samerkae Kovindha, senior in finance and accounting and president of the International Coordinating Council, said that international week is a unique experience for each student on campus.

"It's a great opportunity for K-State and Manhattan community members to learn about other cultures and promote diversity," said Kovindha, who is from Thailand. "You get to learn about people, make friends, make memories and build your skills. I think it's something that you can't get in the classroom. It's fun and it's a lifetime experience."

The week includes the International Fashion Show, which features cultural outfits from various countries around the world. The show is sponsored by the World Friendship Club, a women's organization for international students and their spouses.

"The event is fun for the entire family," said Steffi VanWagenen, coordinator of the fashion show and member of the World Friendship Club. "You'll learn something about various cultures around the world."

The show includes around 70 models and its intermissions will have music from Bangladesh and Russia.

"You don't have to travel the world to learn about different cultures; you can learn about them right here in Manhattan," VanWagenen said.
