Shaffer to present 'Going Forward From Here: Civil Discourse in the Classroom and the Workplace'

Submitted by Teaching and Learning Center

As part of the Teaching and Learning Center's Professional Development Series, Timothy Shaffer, associate professor of communication studies, will present "Going Forward from Here: Civil Discourse in the Classroom and the Workplace" from noon to 1 p.m. CST Wednesday, Dec. 9, via Zoom. This event was rescheduled from Dec. 2.

The presentation will focus on and explore the ways in which we can engage others constructively, especially when we find ourselves experiencing intense divisions, such as during the 2020 election cycle. Shaffer will explain the ways in which we can and should think about civil discourse, viewpoint diversity and how we can engage others around common topics or concerns while not abandoning strongly held views and positions. We'll consider what we mean by civility and how having strong commitments does not prohibit an openness to engaging others. In fact, that's what make deliberative learning possible.
