Global Campus adds summer cohort of Online Course Design Institute for faculty

Submitted by Grant Guggisberg

Due to increased demand and a record-breaking amount of faculty engagement, Global Campus has added a fourth summer cohort of its new Online Course Design Institute, designed to support instructors as they transition new courses online.

The extra cohort, which still has spots available, will begin Monday, July 6, and end on July 31. The program debuted in April as part of Global Campus' COVID-19 response and has seen more than 400 participants complete either the cohort model or work through a series of self-paced materials.

"This has been an amazing opportunity to get to know faculty from all over the university and interact across disciplines," said Global Campus instructional designer Laura Widenor. "We are sharing great ideas on how to improve teaching, both online and in the classroom."

The program includes a comprehensive checklist to guide the course design process and is customizable to each instructor's experience and comfort level with teaching online. The upcoming cohort will also include information on strategies for blended modalities as faculty prepare for the upcoming fall semester. Additionally, one-on-one support is also available for anyone that needs it.

"I have been pleased with the dedication of our K-State faculty," said Global Campus instructional designer Trina McCarty. "They are passionate about teaching and learning, and they are striving to gather ideas and creative approaches to improve their teaching methods and provide the best learning environment for their students."

The Online Course Design Institute was developed as a partnership between numerous units including Global Campus, the Teaching and Learning Center, iTAC and the Polytechnic Campus as well as other campus leaders. The Institute replaces K-State Online Essentials previously offered to faculty.
