Submitted by Kristi Northcutt

Kansas State University Olathe will be the host site for the Thin Surface Treatments: Bituminous Pavements workshop Dec. 11 and 12. The one-and-a-half-day class is being offered by the Mid-America Transportation Center within the College of Engineering at Kansas State University.

This course is intended to educate engineers, maintenance superintendents, inspectors, technicians and other personnel who will be involved in the implementation of thin surface treatments for pavement preservation or substantial maintenance in Kansas. Instruction will be provided by a select group of instructors from the industry including: James Campbell, Road Science LLC; Brian Hanson, Dustrol Inc.; Ron Matterson, Ergon Asphalt & Emulsion Inc.; Howie Snyder and Dave Keener, Vance Brothers Inc.

The program is made possible as part of a $330,000 grant which was recently announced by the U.S. Department of Transportation to help address critical transportation challenges facing the nation. Overall, $77 million was allocated to the nation's 22 university transportation centers to advance research and education programs that address the critical transportation challenges facing the nation. Each transportation center is a consortium, and these consortiums have a total membership of 121 universities across the U.S.

The workshop will offer modules in microsurfacing, surface recycling, chip seal and ultra-thin bonded asphalt surface, or UBAS. The course registration fee of $150 includes all course materials, handouts and a certificate of participation. Additionally, optional continuing education units or 16 contact hours are also available for an additional $10.
