Instructional design, technology roundtable fall series

Submitted by Swasati Mukherjee

The instructional design and technology roundtable series is kicking off this semester with an exciting line of topics. All events will be 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room 227 at the K-State Student Union. The following is the lineup:

  • Thursday, Sept. 27 – E-textbooks and Beyond
Interested in creating your own e-textbook for your online or face-to-face class or use a publisher’s e-textbook or simply learn about open educational resources available? This session will be presented by Andrew Bennett, David Fallin and Brian Lindshield, joined by Steve Levin and Jayme Carpenter from Varney's bookstore. Come join the discussion and share your thoughts.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 23 – Teaching with the iPad
Thinking about buying an iPad or own one already, want to learn about specific apps to use in your classroom or daily life? Join Dennis Devenney, Mary Hammel, Mattew Heinrich and Rusty Earl from the College of Education’s Catalyst Center for a closer look at some of these apps.
  • Friday, Nov. 9 - Teaching Science Labs at a Distance
The teaching of empirical science courses online has been constrained by the challenges of recreating wet lab experiences for online learners. Some universities partner with other institutions to offer local labs for learners; others request that learners arrange their own access for hands-on learning. Home labs are used in some curricular domains, which involve the uses of designed lab kits that are mailed to learners. Others use virtual simulations. This session will be presented by Huseyin Dogan, Lisa Pohlman, Annelise Nguyen, Christopher Culbertson, Stefan Bossmann, C. Michael Smith, and Michael W. Moore. Join us for this presentation, which will introduce seven K-State faculty members who have been delivering wet lab learning using a variety of strategies and tools. Online lab providers will be available from 10-11 a.m. and after the instructional design and technology roundtable from 12:30-2 p.m. to give demonstrations, discuss their resources and answer your questions in the Flint Hills Room in the Union.

RSVP to catl@k-state.edu or 785-532-7828 to ensure enough seating is available. Coffee, teaand water will be on hand, and you are welcome to bring your lunch.

Videos of previous presentations, upcoming topics and more are on the instructional design and technology roundtable website.
