Excite! event: Shadow Day Sept. 19 lets high school girls find out more about majors in engineering, science and more

Submitted by Communications & Marketing

High school girls will tag along with Kansas State University undergraduates majoring in the engineering, science, mathematics and other fields on Shadow Day, Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the university.

The event is sponsored by Kansas State University's Excite! -- Exploring Science, Engineering and Technology -- Program. Excite! introduces high school girls to science, technology, engineering, mathematics and agriculture fields. It is offered through the university's office for the advancement of women in science and engineering. Registration is available at http://www.k-state.edu/excite and is available until Sept. 17.

University undergraduates in these fields will serve as mentors to the high school girls, giving them an up close look at what the university offers. The high schoolers will find out what a day in the life of college student is like by going to classes and work with their mentors.

"Shadow Day is a great opportunity for girls who want a better idea of college life and want firsthand experience before they enter as a freshman," said Yasche Glass, program coordinator with the office for the advancement of women in science and engineering. "We encourage girls to participate in Shadow Days, and our university faculty are more than willing to accommodate future undergraduates in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and agriculture."

For additional information and to register, call Glass at 785-532-6088 or visit the EXCITE! website at www.k-state.edu/excite. Future Shadow Days are scheduled for Nov. 12 and Dec. 3.
