William J. Spencer Lecture to feature University of Toronto mathematician

Submitted by Beth Bohn

A University of Toronto mathematician will present the 42nd William J. Spencer Lecture, sponsored by the department of mathematics.

Boris Khesin's lecture, "Topological and Symplectic Hydrodynamics," will take place at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 31, in 102 Cardwell Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Topological fluid dynamics studies topological features of flows with complicated trajectories and their applications to fluid motions. The main ideas for this can be traced back to a seminal 1966 paper by V. Arnold. In his lecture, Khesin will survey various results on invariants of ideal and symplectic fluid flows.
