Ann Smit named fellow of speech-language-hearing association

Submitted by Jane P. Marshall

Ann Bosma Smit, professor in communication science and disorders, has been elected a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. It is the organization's the highest form of recognition of professional achievements.

Smit is author or coauthor of major studies establishing norms of acquisition of speech sounds and author a resource book for clinicians on speech sound disorders.

Her current research is about the effectiveness of a form of intervention she has developed for preschoolers who have moderate to severe speech sound disorders. She has a Ph.D. in hearing and speech sciences from the University of Maryland.

"This is a tremendous honor for Professor Smit, and for the entire Speech and Hearing Center," said Maurice MacDonald, director of the school of family studies and human services in the College of Human Ecology. "Her achievements demonstrate how the center serves as a stellar unit for teaching, research and clinical services in our school."

Smit will honored at the group's convention in November in Atlanta.
