McCants attends international conflict resolution school at University of Ulster

Submitted by Jane P. Marshall

Terrie R. McCants, instructor in the School of Family Studies and Human Services, attended the 13th annual International Conflict Resolution Centre at the University of Ulster (INCORE) Summer School in Northern Ireland recently. The invitation-only school provides a structured learning opportunity to analyze the dynamic and constantly changing field of conflict resolution and peace building.

Representatives from 55 countries participated. Prof. John Hume, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was among the notables in the field that helped the group focus on the latest research and concepts in peace and conflict studies and practice.

Participants had the opportunity to create links between theory, practice and policy. Special attention was given to how the experience and research of both practitioners and academics can impact upon policy makers within the field of conflict resolution, peacemaking, peace building and reconciliation.

McCants teaches courses in conflict resolution in the department of family studies and human services in the College of Human Ecology. She is program director for the graduate and undergraduate certificates in conflict resolution and co-coordinator for the conflict analysis and trauma studies minor. She is also a facilitation associate with K-State’s Institute for Civil Discourse and Democracy and an approved mediator and mediation trainer in the state of Kansas.

The INCORE Summer School is co-sponsored by the Sustainable Peace Building Programme of the European Commission’s Marie Curie Actions.
