Cro presents at American Association of Teachers of French national convention

Submitted by Melinda Cro

Melinda A. Cro, associate professor of French in the modern languages department, presented an hourlong workshop on the intersection between collaboration, the digital humanities, and translation in the second language classroom at this year's annual convention of the American Association of Teachers of French, July 16-19, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Her talk, "Collaborative Perspectives on Translation and the Digital Humanities in the Advanced French Classroom," stemmed from a co-taught seminar with colleague Kathleen Antonioli in fall 2016, "Translating the Freedom Papers: Charles De Gaulle and WWII Correspondence."

The course utilized a largely unpublished archive of letters, written between 1941 and 1944 between De Gaulle and English leaders, including Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden, recently obtained by Hale Library's Morse Department of Special Collections as the primary corpus. Recent research in translation studies and pedagogy has indicated that collaborative, task-based approaches to language learning broadly and translation specifically have the potential to improve both outcomes and student attitudes. The case study presented the impact of translation studies and digital humanities pedagogy on collaboration and the second language classroom.

Antonioli and Cro have co-authored a forthcoming article on the subject appearing in the French Review, the prestigious, peer-reviewed journal of the American Association of Teachers of French with the largest circulation of any French/Francophone studies journal. The article will appear in volume 91.4 later this year.
