Beyond the Classroom presents 'Design Disruptors' documentary
Design not only determines how products appear and function, but it also determines whether they even survive. The importance of design as a catalyst for successful innovation is the focus of a 75-minute documentary called "Design Disruptors."
The documentary showcases the power of product design in modern businesses that have been "shaking up stale industries and redefining normal," according to a news release by Invision, the company that produced the film.
Nadav Reis, InVision's educational partnerships coordinator, worked with Kimetris Baltrip, a journalism professor in the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications, to bring the documentary to K-State.
"The film centers around the rising importance of design as a competitive advantage in disruptive technologies. Students and teachers are coming away from the screening inspired and more interested in design," Reis said.
Baltrip said she wanted to show the film to students in her entrepreneurial journalism CAT community to help them better understand the potential of their creativity.
"Disruption is a dominant factor in the marketplace and it is what inspires entrepreneurs to embark on innovation. When I discovered the film, I definitely wanted to bring it to K-State for my students, but eventually the screening became a part of a much larger plan," Baltrip said.
A one-time screening of "Design Disruptors" will be presented at Beyond the Classroom, a co-curricular event sponsored by K-State First and Housing and Dining Services. The free screening will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, in 004 Kedzie Hall.
"Design Disruptors" premiered in June 2016 and has been seen by thousands of viewers worldwide. Proceeds from future sales of the film will support the AIGA Worldstudio Scholarship, benefiting minority and economically disadvantaged students studying art and design in U.S. colleges and universities.
