Lecture, reception to recognize Saint John's Bible donors April 3
The recent gift of the Saint John’s Bible Heritage edition to K-State Libraries will be celebrated with a lecture, reception and viewing in recognition of donors and Kansas State University alumni Warren and Mary Lynn Staley beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in Hale Library.
The Rev. Eric Hollas, senior associate for arts and cultural affairs at St. John’s University, will present “A Medieval Exercise in the 21st Century: The Making of The Saint John's Bible” at 3 p.m. in Hale Library’s Hemisphere Room. Hollas is an expert on medieval manuscripts who has a doctorate in medieval studies from Yale University. Since 1980, Hollas has been a member of the faculty of the School of Theology and Seminary and Department of Theology at Saint John's University. From 1993 to 2002 he was executive director of the Hill Monastic Manuscript Library at Saint John's University. Among his many activities, Hollas was instrumental in initiating the Saint John's Bible and has spoken on that project at venues throughout the United States.
Following Hollas’ talk and installation of the gift by Dean of Libraries Lori Goetsch, the Saint John’s Bible volumes will be on display in the Special Collections Reading Room on Hale Library’s fifth floor. One of the unique aspects of this gift grants the public the opportunity to see and handle the volumes, increasing their impact as objects of art and culture.
At 5 p.m. in the fifth-floor gallery, a reception will begin to honor donors Warren and Mary Lynn Staley. Light refreshments will be available and the reception will conclude with remarks from President Kirk Schulz at 5:30 p.m.
The lecture, viewing and reception are free and open to the public. This event is part of the Creativity Illuminated series, a celebration exploring culture, which also includes workshops, movie screenings and a free performance by the Yuval Ron Ensemble.
