Accreditation visit kicks off with a namesake treat

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

When evaluators from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association visit Kansas State University April 9-11, the campus will be able to greet them with more than helpful answers and a welcoming smile.

They’ll be able to greet them with a scoop of official HLC ice cream.

Christina Nash, administrative assistant in the department of animal sciences and industry and Classified Senate member, said the idea for the HLC ice cream -- “Hazelnut with Lots of Chocolate” -- was, at first, slightly tongue-in-cheek.

“At a recent Classified Senate meeting, we were brainstorming ways to make the HLC team feel welcome,” Nash said. “The ice cream idea was suggested as a joke, then I told them we could actually do that.”

After administrators and the dairy plant manager approved the project, the HLC ice cream was created. The department of animal sciences and industry made its first batch of the ice cream for Call Hall in March, with a new batch planned for April 5 -- just in time for the HLC visit.

“It seems to be a hit,” Nash said. “People who have tried it really like it. It’s very rich, but very good. It’s a fun way to promote the HLC’s visit and make them feel welcome.”

The chocolate ice cream features hazelnut and dark chocolate chunks. It will be available at Call Hall until supplies run out.

HLC evaluators will be visiting campus to determine if K-State’s academic and administrative programs meet certain quality standards. The university has been accredited by the HLC since 1916.
