Office of Institutional Equity hosts Title IX conference

Submitted by Office of Institutional Equity

Kansas State University hosted members from 15 universities May 2-3 for the Consortium for Title IX & Equity Officers in Higher Ed to share best practices and innovative solutions to the topics of sexual violence and inequality in higher education.

The conference was initiated by K-State's Office of Institutional Equity to provide an opportunity for Big 12 universities to come together to expand their knowledge and skills. The initiative quickly expanded to include universities from neighboring states that also had a shared vision to collectively address this national concern.

Participating universities included the University of Kansas, Iowa State University, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, University of Texas at Austin, Texas Tech University, Baylor University, University of Colorado, Boulder; University of Nebraska, Lincoln; University of Missouri, West Virginia University, Michigan State University, Washburn University, Wichita State University and Pittsburg State University.

Experts and officials provided guidance and training in areas such as:

  • Updates on the law and litigation in the areas of Title IX and Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity.
  • Secondary trauma and similar issues that can affect employees that assist individuals in need.
  • Law enforcement's response to sexual assault.
  • Ways that universities can assist sexual violence survivors to get care and support.

This was the second conference hosted by K-State's Office of Institutional Equity this academic year. Conferences are planned at the University of Colorado, Boulder in fall 2016 and Baylor University in spring 2017.
