Undergraduate poster forum highlights engineering research
Sixty-two Kansas State University engineering undergraduate students participated in the spring 2016 Engineering Undergraduate Research Poster Forum, April 15, in the Engineering Complex atrium.
The event featured 40 poster presentations from eight different engineering departments. Research topics included advanced materials and processes, biomedical applications, energy and power, water and others. Thirty-two faculty and graduate students were involved in judging the posters, with many stopping by to view the entries.
"In addition to gaining experience in presenting their work in a professional setting," said Noel Schulz, associate dean of research and graduate programs in the College of Engineering, "the forum also gives students an opportunity to share their research activities with fellow K-State students and faculty."
Poster forum participants must choose between two categories to present their research: undergraduate research or design/build/team/class research project. Judging was separate for each category, with the following awarded first- through third-place in each category:
Undergraduate research category
First place, $500 award, Caroline Kabus, senior, architectural engineering and construction science; research adviser Chris Ahern, assistant professor of architectural engineering and construction science.
Second place, $300 award, Adam Lappe, senior, biological and agricultural engineering; research adviser, Ed Brokesh, instructor of biological and agricultural engineering.
Third place, $100 award, Lucas Verschelden, senior, industrial and manufacturing systems engineering; research advisers, Shing Chang and Margaret Rys, both associate professors of industrial and manufacturing systems engineering.
Design/build/team/class project research category
First place, $500 award, Devon Ronsse, junior; and Mark Neal, freshman, both chemical engineering; research adviser, Ed Brokesh, instructor, biological and agricultural engineering.
Second place, $300 award, Casey Weiser, Duc Nguyen and Andrew Wolford, all seniors, mechanical and nuclear engineering; research adviser, Hitesh Bindra, assistant professor, mechanical and nuclear engineering.
Second place, $300 award, Keith Whelchel, John Boyington, Sean Quinn and Carl Rosenwald, all seniors, mechanical and nuclear engineering; research adviser, Hitesh Bindra, assistant professor, mechanical and nuclear engineering.
Third place, $100 award, Tanzila Ahmed and Timothy Sample, both seniors, electrical and computer engineering and Alex Dzewaltowski, junior, mechanical and nuclear engineering; research advisers Ruth Miller, associate professor electrical and computer engineering and Warren White, professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering.
