Dorhout delivers leadership training for emerging academic leaders

Submitted by Sarah Hancock

Interim Vice President for Research Peter Dorhout traveled to Washington, D.C., Jan. 31-Feb. 2 to present two sessions at the Cottrell Scholars Collaborative Academic Leadership Training. The selective training admits 28 Cottrell Scholars who are post-tenure faculty with leadership goals including department chair, center director, dean and vice president positions. Cottrell Scholars are outstanding teacher-scholars recognized by their scientific communities for research quality and innovation as well as academic leadership skills. The Cottrell Scholars are selected by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement, or RCSA.

Dorhout received a Cottrell Scholar Award in 1994 and is a member of the RCSA board of directors. He collaborated with two other Cottrell Scholars to provide early-career leadership development for chemists and physicists at universities. The American Chemistry Society and American Physical Society provided some support for the event.

Dorhout's sessions, titled "Engaging and Motivating Colleagues and Staff" and "Friend Raising and Stewardship," cover formal and informal leadership by connecting with colleagues and building paths forward as well as engaging friends, alumni and corporate partners to acquire necessary resources. Both sessions will include case studies and facilitated group discussion.

Since its inception in 1994, more than 300 scholars have been selected. Each year, a group of scholars are invited to initiate academic professional development programs around the country through the Cottrell Scholars Collaborative. These programs have focused on new faculty development, graduate teaching assistant training and effective evaluation of teaching and learning.
