University statement concerning the proposed Federal 2013 budget

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

On Monday U.S. President Barack Obama released the 2013 federal budget, which includes $10 million to accelerate research focused on African swine fever and classical swine fever at Kansas State University's Biosecurity Research Institute. The funding affirms K-State scientists' expertise in research on pandemic threats, as well as the university's capability to continue research on high-threat animal diseases and agents.

Questions have also been raised about the lack of proposed funding for the Department of Homeland Security's National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility.

The K-State administration has been working closely with our congressional delegation and is confident of their support for the NBAF. The release of the proposed budget is just one step in an appropriations process that will unfold in the coming months. We believe Kansas State University will continue to play a vital role in protecting our nation’s food supply.

The Kansas congressional delegation and governor issued a statement about the proposed federal budget. It is available here.
