Piano professor teaches in Taiwan

In late December 2011, Slawomir P. Dobrzanski, associate professor of music and chair of keyboard studies, offered masterclasses and individual piano lessons in the Republic of China, or Taiwan, to about 30 young pianists at Aletheia University in Tamsui – New Taipei City – and at National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung.

Aletheia University is one of the oldest universities in Taiwan, established in 1872 by a Canadian Presbyterian minister and physician, George Leslie Mackay. National Sun Yat-sen University – located on the shore of the South China Sea in the port city of Kaohsiung – was established in 1980. It is one of the fastest growing universities in the Republic of China. The NSYSU campus is famous for its spectacular sea views and its resident Formosan rock monkeys.

In addition to piano lessons and masterclasses, Dobrzanski presented lecture-recitals about Polish piano music and the 19th century pianist-composer Maria Szymanowska.
