Educational gaming: Sifteo Cubes in education seminar Feb. 11
Nathan Bean, computing and information science for the K-State Gaming and Immersive Environments Group, will present "Sifteo Cubes in Education" from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 11, in 257 Bluemont Hall.
Sifteo cubes are a distributed computer interface consisting of square cubes — each about the size of an iPod Nano — equipped with video screens and sensors that determine when they are moved, touched and placed next to one another. This physically manipulable interface makes them ideal for kinesthetic learning, especially for early childhood and for tackling complex subjects through the use of concrete metaphors.
Students and faculty in computer science have developed and conducted classroom research on using the cubes to help early childhood learners develop facility with phonemic awareness — and important stepping stone to literacy. Additionally, they are developing, in partnership with Christopher Culbertson, a Sifteo Cube application for teaching the basics of chemistry. Come see the potential in these wondrous devices.
