Faculty, students present at Kansas Speech Language Hearing Association annual conference

Faculty and students in the communication sciences and disorders program presented various topics at the 2014 Conference of the Kansas Speech Language Hearing Association Sept. 18-20 in Overland Park.  

Jane Garcia, professor, presented "Maximizing Communication Effectiveness for Speakers with Dysarthria." 

Michelle Haub, clinical instructor and 2014 KSHA president, presented "Everyone's an Advocate" along with other Kansas Speech Language Hearing Association Executive Board members.

Kristin Pelczarski, along with members of the association's Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Task Force, presented "Current Issues for School-Based SLPs" on areas related to speech-language pathology assistants, workload/caseload models, and state guidelines for SLPs.

Student and faculty also presented several posters on a variety of research topics.

Courtney Chacon, who earned her bachelor's degree in communication sciences and disorders in May; Jane Garcia, professor of communication sciences and disorders; and Edgar Chambers IV, professor of human nutrition, presented "Perceptions about Pre-thickened Water: Is All Nectar the Same?"

Maria Baker, graduate student in communication sciences and disorders, and Debra Burnett, assistant professor of communication sciences and disorders, presented "Prosody in Children with ASD in Narrative and Figurative Language."

Kristin Dorsey and Jenny Schmidt, graduate students in communication sciences and disorders, Debra Burnett and Ann Smit, professor of communication sciences and disorders, presented "Caregiver/Parent Understanding-the-Child Questionnaire: A Normative Study."

Becca Fusaro, graduate student in communication sciences and disorders, Megan Cantu, undergraduate student in architecture, and members of the K-State Autism Research Team: Debra Burnett, assistant professor of communication sciences and disorders; Katie Kingery-Page, associate professor of landscape architecture; Marilyn Kaff, associate professor of special education; Sara Fisher, instructor at K-State Salina; and Bronwyn Fees, associate professor of early childhood education, presented "Playing Naturally: A Child with Autism in an Outdoor Setting."
