Kansas Board of Regents Sept. 17 meeting

The monthly Kansas Board of Regents meeting on Sept. 17 included several items related to Kansas State University.
Introductions and reports: Students' Advisory Committee
Reagan Kays, K-State student body president, presented at the meeting as chair of the board's Students' Advisory Committee. He discussed a non-partisan campaign to encourage students to register to vote, a proposed update of the committee's bylaws and policies concerning the health and safety of students.
Mosier Hall renovations
Capital improvements for College of Veterinary Medicine's small animal clinic in Mosier Hall were approved. The project will renovate approximately 9,500 square feet at a cost of more than $1.8 million, which will be funded from cash balances in the Veterinary Health Center fund and private gifts.
University Engineering Initiative Act
The goal of the University Engineering Initiative Act is to have 1,365 engineering graduates statewide each year by 2021.
Kansas State University's goal is to have 587 engineering graduates each year by 2021. The latest numbers show that Kansas State University had 3,118 enrolled engineering students and 471 engineering graduates for the 2012-2013 academic year.
State university admissions policies
The Board of Regents approved updated admissions policies, which Kansas State University and other state universities will follow beginning with the 2015-2016 academic year.
Precollege curriculum now will be required for all state university applicants. New student applicants to Kansas State University must meet these requirements:
- Complete precollege curriculum with a 2.0 GPA, 2.5 for nonresidents; and
- Achieve ACT score of at least 21, SAT score of at least 980, or graduate in top 1/3 of high school class.
Welcome center to be named for Berney Family
The regents approved the naming of K-State's new welcome center as the Berney Family Welcome Center in recognition of the $11 million commitment to advance the university made by Rand and Patti Berney, McKinney, Texas.
Classified information update
Following a report by President Schulz, the regents approved a resolution that updates policy precluding the board from exercising management control over classified information related to projects at the Biosecurity Research Institute. The policy transfers control of classified information management at the BRI to K-State's University Security Executive Committee. The policy update and approval were required by federal law on security clearances and access to classified information.
