Office of student life welcomes Thompson, announces Jones' promotion

Submitted by Heather Reed

The K-State Office of Student Life announces the hiring of Andy Thompson as assistant dean. He is filling the position previously held by Karen Low who resigned in July. Thompson graduated with a master's degree in counselor education/student affairs from Clemson University and has worked for K-State housing and dining for five years as a residence life coordinator. He had been promoted to an area coordinator in May. He has experience in working closely with students and is well informed about campus resources and policies.

"I believe one of my strengths is my ability to connect with students on a personal level and challenge them to become the best they can be during their time at the university and in their chosen field," Thompson said.

Thompson joins new Assistant Dean Sarah Webb, a recent master's degree graduate in marriage and family therapy from K-State, who was hired in May after a national search. Webb has deep K-State roots, earning both her bachelor's degree and master's degree from K-State and has experience working with students in the U.S. and abroad.

Scott Jones has been promoted to associate dean of student life. He will continue with duties in the Office of Student Life as well as take the new role of director of nonviolence programs. He will supervise the Center for Advocacy, Response and Education, or CARE, — formerly the Women's Center; the SafeZone Program; the LGBT Resource Center; and the Campaign for Nonviolence. Jones has 15 years of experience at K-State working at student life and also as director of Greek affairs. He is a doctoral student in counseling and student development. He began his career in Greek Life at the University of South Dakota, and then moved to housing at Oregon State University where he was a residence hall director, area coordinator and assistant director of housing. Jones also serves as the co-chair of Community Cultural Harmony Week.

Heather Reed, assistant vice president and associate dean of student life, rounds out the staff at the Office of Student Life.

Reed said, "I am very excited about the staff at the Office of Student Life and know that students, faculty, staff and families will find caring, knowledgeable and skilled help for all student issues."

Based on the recent senior survey, 85 percent of student reported receiving support and encouragement from Office of Student Life that contributed to their success at K-State.
