Volunteer to serve as faculty mentor for the 2014 Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program

Submitted by Graduate School

The Graduate School is searching for potential faculty mentors for the 2014 Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, or SUROP.

The program will be from May 27 to July 25 and is designed to provide research experience to undergraduate students from underrepresented groups — first-generation college students; ethnic minorities; females in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines; or those attending institutions that offer little or no research experience opportunities. Preference is given to students applying from other universities interested in graduate degrees offered at Kansas State University.

Participants are expected to spend 40 hours per week working on research-related activities — such as library work, data collection and analyses. Participants also are required to attend weekly seminars and are expected to attend other events coordinated by the Graduate School.

The seminars provide participants with valuable information about research and the graduate school experience. Other events and activities may be educational in nature and serve to promote interaction among participants and participants of other K-State undergraduate summer research programs. Mentors are asked to plan research activities around weekly seminars and other scheduled events.

Faculty interested in serving as mentors must be available during the majority of the nine-week program and should have regular and frequent interactions with their student. Mentors are strongly encouraged to participate in social events and other activities hosted by the program coordinators.  A department must be able to provide $1,500 of support for each participant mentored by its faculty.

If you are interested in serving as a faculty mentor, or if you have questions, please contact the Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program coordinators at gdschgra@k-state.edu.
