Submitted by Tresa Landis

The Manhattan branch of the American Association of University Women, or AAUW, has planned several activities to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8.

The annual event is a global day of recognizing and honoring the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. AAUW has assembled a panel of local international women to speak with groups throughout the day.

The panelists include Rebecca Hackemann-Bahlmann, K-State assistant professor of art, who grew up in Great Britain and Germany; Madai Rivera who holds a dual role at K-State as assistant to the vice president for student life, and coordinator for academic services and diversity in the College of Human Ecology's dean's office, a native of Mexico; Mary Ng'ang'a, a designer with GTM Sportswear and a native of Kenya; and Nigerian native Chi Ehie who is a special education teacher with USD 383.

The day begins with a Community Women Leaders Breakfast at JP's Sports Grill at Jardine Apartments. Following breakfast, attendees will have a chance to network and exchange ideas.

The featured event is a dinner and public forum in the Landon Room of the Holiday Inn at the Campus, 1641 Anderson Ave. The forum will feature a panel discussion moderated by branch member and Manhattan City Commissioner Usha Reddi. The panelists will share their personal immigration experiences. The dinner begins at 6 p.m. with a cost per plate of $22. Reservations can be made by emailing your name and contact information to manhattanksaauw@gmail.com by March 1. A reservation is not necessary to attend the public forum which begins at 7 p.m.

Plan to come and bring a friend as the community celebrates this important day of acknowledging women.
